Tips to improve semen quality

We already know that the better the quality of the partner’s semen, the more likely pregnancy will be. However, reality tells us that la calidad del semen lleva años empeorando: casi la mitad de los casos de infertilidad se deben al factor masculino. ¿Se puede hacer algo para mejorarlo?

Although technical advances allow us to optimize semen samples in the laboratory, there are a number of external factors that could contribute to improving sperm quality. We explain them below.

Tobacco and alcohol

Limiting (or better yet, avoiding) the consumption of toxic substances is one of the first steps to take. Se ha demostrado que la calidad del semen en hombres fumadores o bebedores es inferior. De hecho, en términos de lograr el embarazo una vez iniciado un tratamiento de reproducción, también sería conveniente dejar de fumar o moderar el alcohol.

Sport and physical activity

Regular exercise is not only a great and fun way to stay fit. It also increases some of the essential valuesof semen. However, it is recommended that it be done in moderation; it has been proven that sport with high physical demands and overexertion can worsen semen quality.

Clothes

For some time now, tight, extremely tight trousers have become fashionable. Wearing this type of clothing frequently can worsen semen production due to reasons such as increased genital temperature or the pressure they exert on the testicles.

Electronics

Anything that causes the temperature in the groin area to rise can be harmful to semen. That’s why it’s a good idea to avoid working with a laptop on your lap, for example. Or keep your mobile phone in your front trouser pocket, especially when they’re hot after prolonged and demanding use.

Feeding

We are what we eat. So a healthy and balanced diet will have a positive impact on many aspects of our lives. Also on the quality of semen. In this sense, there are some nutrients that will have a special impact on sperm: ácido fólico (presente en cereales integrales, legumbres y verduras), la vitamina C(en frutas y verduras), la luteína y el betacaroteno (espinacas, lechuga, zanahoria).

Lifestyle habits

There are a number of factors in our daily lives that can contribute to the deterioration of our semen. The way we deal with stress, for example. Although it may not be possible to avoid it, it is advisable to take measures to combat it: exercise, channel it through therapy or simply allow ourselves to do leisure activities that free our minds. Sexual practice is also positive, since in addition to helping us relax, it allows us to regenerate sperm.
