Approximately 40% of women will have some uterine fibroid at some point in their reproductive life.
This is a benign tumor of the uterine wall that occurs in the reproductive system. It is also called fibroid, leiomyoma or fibromyoma. They can be single, but most often they are multiple.
Some of the risk factors for suffering from them are heredity, race (more frequent in the black race), obesity, perimenopause and high concentrations of circulating estrogen and progesterone.
Female fertility may be affected by the presence of fibroids in the case of any of these factors:
•Obstruction of the progress of sperm towards the fallopian tubes.
•Changes or alterations in the uterine cavity.
•Loss of the uterine contraction capacity.
•Changes in blood flow.
For this reason, myomas that make it difficult to achieve pregnancy are usually removed, as well as those that alter the uterine cavity or are large, always at the discretion of the specialist. Myomectomy (their removal) is usually performed by laparotomía, laparoscopia o histeroscopia.
